Review of Red Eye (2005) by Bill V — 18 Sep 2010
Normal Guy 50-Word or Less Plot: A hotel manager flying from Dallas to Miami finds herself in a very difficult situation helping a very dangerous passenger.
Director Wes Craven is usually associated with the horror film genre but "Red Eye: shows he has some command of the thriller genre.
Rachael McAdams ("Mean Girls") is wonderful in her role as a friendly but vulnerable hotel manager who is returning home from her grandmother's funeral. She is thrown into a very immoral and terrifying situation with Cillian Murphy ("Batman Begins') who plays a conspirator and assassin. He also performs his role well but I found his character a little unbelievable. I'll say this. I expect an assassin to be a better fighter. McAdams also comes off as a good action heroine and her performance kept me in the movie.
Some of the shooting and editing is good and there some nice effects in the plane scenes. There's one particularly good scene where a hotel room gets blown up. I later found out it was done in one take. I was impressed.
The underlying themes of vulnerability, hurt and redemption are very clear. There are a couple of plot holes and leaps of plausibility but it gets a pass for an okay psychological thriller.
Better than "Flightplan.".
