Review of Red Eye (2005) by Gijoe54 — 09 Jun 2023
Red Eye is a slick, compact, thriller. The story is enthralling, the characters fleshed out completely, the rewatch value high, the acting superb, and I could go on…the only limiting factor is my word count.
In short, it’s about a simple hotel manager held hostage on a crowded plane, being forced to take part in a political assassination. The setup used in this film is satisfying and frequent. I also appreciate the intelligence of the writers to clearly think of more than one outcome of a scene, meaning plot-holes are, to my critical eye, nonexistent.
Characters are compelling with Lisa having an extremely sympathetic backstory that unravels as the story progresses. Jack is up there as one of my personal favorite villains. He’s cold, calculated, and frankly, terrifying.
All these characters are backed up by solid acting, especially Cillian Murphy. The soundtrack is appropriately serviceable, though you’re not going to be compelled to buy the soundtrack by the end. One of the best features of this film is clocking in under ninety minutes and every minute is used to the fullest extant, but the story never feels rushed.
If you’re looking for a thriller high in adrenaline and low in run minutes, Red Eye is the movie for you.
