Review of Red Desert (1964) by Zack M — 10 Mar 2011
If cinematography was the only thing I was rating this film on then it would be a five-star film. This film is flipping gorgeous, and it isn't even depicting things which you would considered beautiful in real life. The scenery of this industrial stylized world reflects the clutter going on within this main characters' minds and it really is awe-inspiring some of the shots Antonioni creates. It's worth a watch just to see the beauty the film creates out of this desolate country.
The story is where this film flops, and it flops hard. I cannot think of one interesting part of the story. It's dry, boring, and extremely uneventful. I would actually rather watch the scenery shot, which outnumber the actual story developing scenes 2:1, then have to try and figure out what the heck the plot was attempting to portray.
