Review of Red Dawn (1984) by Sam R — 12 Jun 2008
Red Dawn would be a pretty decent war movie, if it was even remotely plausible. But the things it asks yo to believe about the nature of nuclear weapons and retaliation policy, as well as the technology and methods of communist military forces are just too big to swallow.
Even if you could get past the plausibility factor, you'd still have to wrestle with the lack of character development; the fact that the events of the main plot seem to be pointless, or even counter productive in retrospect; the fact that the movie actually glorifies terrorism of the sort our army is fought in Vietnam and is fighting in Iraq right now; and the fact that the only person even trying to act well in the cast is Patrick Swayze, and that's only if you can call his hap-hazard scenery munching acting.
Bottom line, the movie had a lot of problems.
