Review of Red Dawn (1984) by Rachel F — 29 Jan 2010
Nay-sayers say what you will about this film, but is what it is, a powerful, dramatic film that really grows on you. An all-star cast of 80's stars and future stars fight against a United States invasion by Russia in the early days of World War III.
The character development is spot on, with the high schoolers typically bewildered and terrified but in time growing willful, hardened, and dedicatedly militant against the country's foes. The interplay between the relationships in the film is masterful.
You cheer for the girls fighting every bit as hard as the boys (think Lea Thompson with a mchine gun), the tragic downfall of the humanity of C. Thomas Howell's character, and the deep, unbreakable bond between the brothers portrayed by Patrick and Charlie.
Everything about this film works, and it is alot more than meets the eye. A gem.
