Review of Red Dawn (1984) by Shark M — 26 May 2010
I feel like this review needs some explanation. Red Dawn gets 3 stars because it is outdated, cheesy and slow. However, when the movie is all said and done, there are a lot of redeeming qualities. In World War III, the Soviets and Cubans have invaded the heartland of America.
Quickly, American families are held hostage in concentration camps, millions are being killed, and America is on the verge of social anarchy. Lucky for us, The Wolverines are the only ones left. Together, a group of teenagers must band together as one in order to save America and avenge their fallen friends and families.
Pretty ridiculous concept, yes, but dumb 80s action movie, no. The first PG-13 movie to hit the big screen, the movie does not shy away from some pretty controversial and interesting ideas. Despite the sloppiness, at times I found myself in awe at how smart the movie could have been given the right team.
Unfortunately, Red Dawn merely touches on the matters and does little to evoke emotions from the audience. With a grittier and more realistic approach, I really feel this movie could be a raging success.
