Review of Red Dawn (1984) by John A — 17 Oct 2010
After re-watching this film after many years, I realized this may be the most far-fetched concept ever achieved in the history of cinema, and NO this review is not meant to offend any Swayze fans. So...what do you get when famous 80s teen-hearthrobs are thrown into World War III? A group of terrorists (oh wait..."Freedom Fighters") with none other than Patrick Swayze as their leader. There is minor character devolpment, but eventually falls flat, as I don't think I was supposed to say "this is ridiculous!" when the female lead, is killed. Even Powers Booth makes an appearence, as the sterotypical hard-nosed Air Force captian of Texan persuasion. Not only are our band of heroes pitted agianst the Russians, but against the Cubans as well, all villians fullfilling the massive xenophobic underlying theme. Many critics have labeled this movie as depressing, but it is really anything but. In fact, the only depressing thing about this movie is the audience that it is intended for...the GOP.
* This movie actually is considered one of the most conservatively-themed movies of all time.
