Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Chris B — 29 Jan 2010
Repetitive battles with large breaks focusing on war strategy and typical philosophical elements. Although the run time on this thing was 4 hours and 30 minutes (I watched the part 1/part 2 version), I still felt a distance from Red Cliff's characters by the end of the film. The film developed upon it's characters just enough to be relevant, and for you to know they're a 'main guy,' but not enough for you to truly care if they die or not in one of the films many battles. I would pretty much just describe this as a Chinese Lord of the Rings minus all the fantasy elements. Also, some of the visuals in this film are indeed striking with some shots looking ridiculously convincing while it still had the occasional so-so cgi.
Overall I enjoyed this Woo epic. Definitely check it out if you liked Hero, or Crouching Tiger.
