Review of Soul of Chiba (1977) by Senor C — 11 Jan 2012
Hardly the best Sonny Chiba movie that is all over the place & highly illogical. After awhile I stopped trying to follow where it was going & just enjoyed the kung fu. Of course the highlight is Chiba kicking ass but even then the direction is so poor that your not really given some of his best material.
As well Chiba is pretty subdued in the role & not as nasty as he is in a majority of his 70s fu flix. Includes a bizarre sequence where some guys are possessed by monkeys & battle Chiba using monkey style kung fu but in turn do a lot of biting.
Bolo Yeung is also underutilized as well as he has had his tongue cut out (probably cast that way because he can't act worth a shit yet) & only has one fight. Hunt it down if you're a Chiba completest but you're much better off watching The Streetfighter series or The Executioner.
