Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Asun G — 08 May 2010
The battle scenes pale next to say, Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" or Peter Jackson's "Two Towers" (let alone Kurosawa) and the cinematography and production values pale when compared to the elegant films of Kaige Chen or Yimou Zhang.
However, this is essential viewing for John Woo fans and probably his best film since "Hard Boiled". Woo leaves his mark all over this epic story. The operatics he infused into his crime/action films are much more at home in this genre.
The downside is that operatics seem less unique in this genre. Still, lots of good action, lots of code of honor themes, and, of course, lots of slow motion birds flying.
