Viewers unfamiliar with the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history may feel that this film amounts to five hours of legendary warrior-sage Zhuge Liang functioning as John Woo's Mary Sue du jour. However, as someone who has played both of Koei's Dynasty Tactics games to completion, I can safely assure you that Zhuge Liang is actually the Mary Sue for all of China, vaguely homoerotic man-to-man pathos and all.
