Review of Red Beard (1965) by Chris W — 09 Aug 2007
My love for samurai cinema knows no bounds, and as much as I love Seven Samurai, Ran, and Kagemusha, Red Beard was my first experience with Kurosawa working outside the genre. The result floored me in a film where men battle with words instead of katanas and the battlefield is reduced to a handful of hospital rooms.
Mifune's final collaboration with Kurosawa was his best.
