Review of Red Beard (1965) by Jeff C — 09 Aug 2007
I am a Samurai freak. I love anything Kurosawa or Toshiro Mifune and I fully expected this to be a film about ancient Japan and feudal times and would have spectacular Japanese sword fighting. But no. This is not at all about war or the cast society of those times.
It is a brilliant film of what it is to be a doctor in Japan. I sobbed like a little kid when they yelled into the well. I just can't watch that scene. It's a killer. Brilliant. A reason if there ever was one for getting out of bed and saying "I'm going to be a director because today I'm going to shoot a movie someone will never forget.
".
