Review of [REC] (2007) by Audrey-Anne B — 01 Nov 2010
The Spanish film later given an American remake called Quarantine (a remake where the trailer nearly put me to sleep) but Rec was suitably tense! If a little old hat in today's overabundance of horror cliche.
Yes, Rec is a shakey handheld camera film, and with it is the usual âwhy are they still filmingâ? questions, but Rec gives some conviction as we follow a reporter and cameraman documenting firemen at work, only to be quarantined inside an apartment block as some sort of infection spreads.
There are some decent scares for sure, but I felt like I'd seen it all before (despite Rec being one of the first!) so I would highly recommend it for horror fans.
There's a scene where they need to check out a dark loft space, and they decide to put the camera up first just to be safe. *Thanks* for that! Did you ask me if I wanted to look in the scary place first?? Neat.
