Review of [REC] (2007) by Ben D — 20 Jan 2013
[-Rec] intrigues from the start with it's documentary viewing style and lively enthusiasm. Once the alarm is raised at the Barcelona fire station the horror begins to kick in and chaos and frenzy ensue with the jumps and scares increasing level by level throughout alongside some fairly funny acts of desperation.
Rec does become a mucho scary horror once the lights get killed within the building and we rely entirely upon the cameras light and night vision (this is where the single camera real documentary feel really comes to the fore).
It's not original in that we've seen Blair Witch, Cloverfield, and even zombie diaries which means it's kind of like a naughty child trying to stand out in a over crowded playground. [-Rec] also doesn't include the best script writing ever heard but it does more for make up for that with some really classy camerawork.
All in all it delivers what it promises well, decent acting in a good short slice of zombie horror. Just keep filming Pablo!
