Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Jack W — 23 Sep 2009
Has a movie ever captured so much thematically from the time it represented? almost every major issue our country dealt with in the 1950's is dealt with in the film on some level. the male crisis of masculinity is represented through Mr.
Stark perfectly when he walks around with the apron. The underlying threat of homosexuality to the American male is seen in Plato's relationship towards Jim. The threat of the the bomb and the end of the world also is felt in the film.
But it is the portrayal of a disgruntled and changing American youth which comes out in full force. Something is not right in our country and through the use of severely tilted camera angles and placements the film tells the audience.
Just a brilliant film with a brilliant cast.
