Guys, lets call a spade a spade here okay. This movie is horribly dated and hard to sit through. By far the most overrated film of all time. I could see how it would have maybe had an impact when it was released but I won't let that be an excuse.
The Catcher in the Rye (while a novel and having more freedom to explore taboo subjects) is a product of the 50's and is leaps and bounds ahead of this! I can't imagine teenagers in the 50's actually acted this way or that they all looked like they were 27 while in high school.
This movie is annoying in its overly angsty mentality and hideously awkward and unfunny (ex. animal noises in the Griffith observatory). I couldn't buy into this film with James Dean as the unpopular weirdo, the guy is fucking super handsome and cool, there is no way he would be scorned.
No knock against James Dean but his quintessential film is Giant, which is extraordinary and also features a young Dennis Hopper, who was presumably not tripping on mescaline at the time.
