Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Brian S — 09 Feb 2009
Really mixed feelings about this one. one the one hand, it's easily the predecessor to just about every "teenage angst/high school drama" ever made, with all the over-dramatic acting and choppy underdeveloped plot structures to boot.
on the other hand, it's so much better than its followers because it commands a true level of depth. the characters are real people with terrific psychological and philosophical richness. certain themes are especially resonant, like parent-child correlative relationships, particularly with the father.
so yes, in one sense this movie is cheesy and ridiculous. but in another it's one of the great universal tragedies. thought-provokingly excellent.
