Review of Rebel in the Rye (2017) by Jennifer N — 08 Sep 2017
I am wondering if I saw the same film as all the reviewers posted here. I really enjoyed Rebel in the Rye - in fact I saw it twice on Thursday and Friday nights. Thank you to the IFC for showing it. Rebel in the Rye is a thoughtful biopic of the tortured J.
D. Salinger who gave us one of the best books I read as a teenager about a tortured teenager. Nicholas Hoult plays a wonderful J.D. Salinger, both in joy and agony. Zoey Deutch plays a beautiful and finicky 16 year old Oona O'Neill.
Kevin Spacey is J.D.'s professor and mentor at Columbia. Sarah Paulson does a great job as Salinger's loyal and loving manager. Victor Garber and Hope Davis are his loving parents who are, respectively, skeptical and encouraging.
Danny Strong's vision of Salinger's life - put together after extensive research - gives me a much better perspective of why we never got more from Salinger - but leaves us in hope there might be more to come.
