Review of Rear Window (1954) by I Don't Know W — 27 Nov 2011

One of the most boring movies I've ever seen, and I've seen some boring ones. This was so boring, I stopped watching it for several days. Sure, James Stewart did good, and it was pretty unique for it's time, but a movie has at least got to be entertaining to be good. Like 12 angry men, this movie pretty much takes place in one room, although you see more than a dozen when the guy looks through them, but, unlike 12 angry men, this movie is focused on one thing, while 12 angry men had some sub plots to make the main plot more interesting. The acting was..... Let's just say the two best actors were Stewart and The dog. This movie is revolutionary, but not the slightest of entertainment is found anywhere in this movie. Very, VERY overrated.

This is one of my older reviews, and to tell you the truth, I DON'T explain WHY it's boring, as back then, I wasn't as intelligent with film, so now I will explain exactly WHY it's so boring.

1. The characters aren't interesting or very well acted, unlike Hitchcock's other films, like Vertigo and Psycho. James Stewart did OK, but this is definitely his worst performance, and Grace Kelly did HORRIBLE. Never showing emotion or any interesting qualities, this is a horrible introduction to her acting career.

2. The suspense doesn't exist as you're never engrossed in the story, for reasons #3 will explain.

3. And the worst of all, the story is so implausible, you can't help but laugh. A photographer breaks his leg, so he spies on people from his apartment window, where in the apartment across from him, he sees a woman and a man argue, the woman falls while the man makes a thrust motion with his arm, and he immediately thinks he murdered her, which is funny because it's a slight hunch, the man left the window open when killing her, the main character is breaking the law by being a peeping tom, and how can someone murder somebody in an APARTMENT BUILDING? Oh well, it's just a movie, but still, I hate it. Enough said. Not Recommended. 1 Star.
