Review of Real Women Have Curves (2002) by Fatoumata D — 09 Nov 2009
Real Women Real Lives.
If you had to choose between what your family wanted for you or following your dreams, what would you pick? That is that decision Ana had to make in the Award Winning film ?Real Women Have Curves?. Ana (America Ferrera) just graduated from high school and her mother Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros) already has plans for her. Ana is thinking about attending college but her mother, Carmen, wants her to get married and work in her sister?s factory.
This movie is about a girl who wants to attend a college but isn?t confident that she can do it because her mother is always criticizing her about her weight and appearance but isn?t so slim and pretty herself. Ana?s sister, Estela, is very supporting of her and believes that she can do anything she sets her mind on. Her father is also very supporting of her and loves her. Ana?s grandfather, Felipe de Alba, is her motivation for everything she does. Without her grandfathers? confidence and boost she wouldn?t be where she was.
One aspect of filmmaking that I approved of in the film was the acting. The director, Patricia Cardoso, picked the right people to play her parts. If she would have picked people who are not within the Hispanic culture, the film would not have been portrayed the way it was with people from the Hispanic community. The actors were wonderful and played their roles very well. While watching the movie, you would think that they are real mother and daughter arguing.
One aspect of filmmaking that I disapproved of was mis-en-scene. What I disliked about this was at the beginning of the movie there was on old lady singing. Throughout the movie they did not elaborate on the old lady or even describe her. Another part that I didn?t like was hoe they introduced Ana?s boyfriend but then he just left without giving him a conclusion. So basically the things that I didn?t like were when they showed characters but didn?t elaborate on them.
I believe that someone should watch this movie because it is very arousing. It is funny with some romance and deals with real life aspects. I love movies that are romantic and funny at the same time. This movie is a little bit of every thing; romantic, funny, and inspiring. If you enjoy movies like that then you wouldn?t mind paying $10 to see it in the movie theaters or more to get it on DVD. On a scale of 1-10 I?d give it a 10.
