Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Jennifer T — 22 Jun 2018
If you take this film for what it is, an enjoyable game movie aimed at teens with nostalgia thrown in for older audience members, then you will find this to be an enjoyable flick. I think that's what this movie is trying to be as well. Not some masterpiece, but a flick for gamers and pop culture-ites to enjoy, so the rest of what I say should be taken with that grain of salt.
The film has plot issues to spare, and if you haven't seen 'the shining', one of the bigger moments in the film will just leave you confused. I'm not much of a vulgar person myself, but it seems like the 's' word is thrown around enough just to be cool. Because teenagers like to be cool, and using the same word over and over and over is cool, right? (warning to some parents who might care, there is one giant 'F' bomb that snuck it's way into the film). Some character design is off putting, there are a couple strange directing decisions, and the movie moves so fast for the first 2/3rd of the film that it makes sense that the movie is based off of a book. Having said that, there are still plenty of 'Oh I know that character!' moments that are fun, and those scenes are pretty much what holds up the film.
As mentioned above, this is a good flick to watch if you just want to smile and take off your critic brain for a couple hours. Enjoy.
