Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Arno N — 07 Apr 2018
I came for 80s flair, Pac Man and crazy D&D references mixed in with the begninnings of the computer scene and non-stereotypical protagonists.
I got 90's console warriors where the current marketability of the franchises was obviously the first and only choice for Spielberg to include them.
Hell the basically only "modern" game mentioned in the book is Blizzards WoW (and that only in passing) but Blizzard nowadays is more concerned about their Overwatch ip so we get loads of the later and none of the former. Also, Minecraft- honestly? This was supposed to be a story about 80s references.
The book mentions a whole load of classical 80s movies but none of them horror themed (which fits perfectly into the mindset of Halliday) and the only movie scene in the oasis that we get is - a horror movie.
Not to mention the simply insulting "nerd group" shown as IOI's consultants. Way to show the core audience of the book that the director neither understands nor cares for them.
Spielberg - you lost it.
If you like the book for it's references - flee from this debacle. You'll get what I call the "IOI has already taken over" version of OASIS. The makers of this movie show us exactly, what the protagonists of the book are fighting against.
If you're looking for a movie to watch wth your console gaming nephew or kid, you might consider it but you could as well save your money and wait for a cheaper way to see it, it certainly will find it's way rather quickly onto one of the streaming services.
