Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Donovan M — 08 Apr 2018
Calling all nerds for a journey through a virtual reality world riddled with imagery and references to 80's pop culture. At its core, 'Ready Player One' is an adventure with riddles and puzzles to move you towards the prize at the end.
Think of it as a high tech Indiana Jones. It's a celebration of geek-dom and nerditude in a way that doesn't get to heavy. There are a lot of metaphors, however. Big business consolidates its power to crush the little guy.
People's need to disconnect from the real world to spend time online in a virtual one. There is even a five minute monologue by the creator of the Oasis (the VR world) about how he felt out of place in the real world.
The key to the movie is that it never gets too preachy about these things. It never passes judgment on its characters or itself. It never stops being anything but a fun adventurous journey marked by things like the Iron Giant, the Back To The Future DeLorean, and even a cameo by Chucky.
