Review of Ready Player One (2018) by David O — 08 Apr 2018
Ready Player One creates a stunning and amazing world of gaming and virtual reality, but ironically at many times in this movie we don't get to see the real world the Oasis stemmed from! The designs, effects and action sequences are a ton of fun and a wonder to behold as you try to pin point the added characters and references, but the script unfortunately lets down the world as it doesn't allow us to fully appreciate it, due to its lack of build up and limited exploration.
The film builds and explores mystery very well, with it working best when it goes in completely new and shocking territory, the characters however need the same build up the world has. The backstory and reasoning can at times be sloppy with a lot of the story told in passing dialogue which will make it hard for some audiences to keep up, especially when so many new terms and names are being used for a un-established universe.
That said Speilberg and the cast know the strengths of this movie with the visuals and fun action sequences being a delight. Mark Rylance does a fantastic job as always while Ty Sheridan and Olivia Cooke also make for likeable leads.
