Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Edzel R — 08 Apr 2018
I've got to be honest, and this may be where a lot of people simply stop reading my review: I'm not a huge Stephen Spielberg fan. His style often teeters on cheesy for me, as he repeats plot patterns and emphasizes the "moral" of his films in such a patronizingly in-your-face style.
However, that does not mean that I'm not a fan on principle, and feel his earlier works were his absolute best. The films we recall as our introduction to his obvious talent - yes, I believe he is very talented - are my favorites of his to this day.
And it is my belief that with Ready Player One, Spielberg recaptures the magical elements and craftsmanship which made his name so synonymous with artful direction in Hollywood. This film was paced very well, visually stunning, and overflowing with heart.
As a gamer and cinephile, I adored this film and everything it had to say. The performances were wonderful, the plot was easy to follow for all audiences without being too tedious or simplistic to immerse the older generations in the theater.
The pacing and editing, which are as valuable to film as a working camera without nearly enough recognition, were top notch. Ready Player One was a magical experience that didn't venture into the handful of territories which landed the book in hot water, yet remained true to its source material, and showed us once again why Stephen Spielberg is widely regarded as a master of cinema.
