Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Dharma — 28 Mar 2018
Spielberg's attempt to reclaim his throne as the king of blockbuster is a pretty good film, but a disappointing Spielberg film. Ever since 2008's lukewarm Kingdom of Crystal Skull, Spielberg's heart is not in the blockbuster genre that he has literally invented.
Ready Player One is at most his most 'serious' attempt at going back to this 'genre'. When it is clearly 'live action', it works wonders. When it is in the OASIS however, the action scenes feel 'floaty'.
It almost feels like the current slew of young 'upstarts' have surpassed the 'master' in 'staging' CGI filled action sequences. Things picked up for the final third where you can feel that Spielberg magic again, yet when his serious films such as 'The Post' are more 'gripping' than his 'blockbuster films', you know that his heart is not fully on it anymore.
