It's just a bunch of nerds doing video game fighting while making cheesy references to pop culture (basically just Scott Pilgrim, remember that dumpster fire?).
The main character is weak and poorly developed, but compared to him the rest might as well be cardboard standees.
There are some flashy effects but every movie has that nowadays, it doesn't impress me anymore. Tons of CGI couldn't save the Star Wars prequels and it doesn't help here.
