Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Zander B — 24 May 2018
Cheesy Spielberg is not enjoyable Spielberg. RPO isn't a bad movie and at it's best it's really fun! With that in mind, RPO didn't know it's tone as it sometimes was a lighthearted film to a film that drops the PG-13 F-bomb.
The OASIS has some of the most interesting scenes in the movie: The first run of the opening race, The Shinning recreation, and Parzival and Art3mis's dance. That said The OASIS has some of the most "eh" scenes in the movie: The second run at the opening race, the first interaction Nolan Sorrento has with i-R0k, and the final battle.
The filmed was easily elevated whenever Olivia Cooke was on screen especially as Samantha Cook. Speaking of Nolan, man was he... a cliche. Nolan at the very end of the movie is cheesy Spielberg at it's worst.
I compared his arrest and the nicely tied bow of the film to 1996's 101 Dalmatians and the arrest of Cruella De Vil through the end.
