Review of Ready or Not (2019) by Afm185 — 21 Jun 2020
This movie is only as good as I expected because I heard it was very good. Would’ve thought that wasn’t the case if I’d heard the premise alone. Not because the premise is bad, as a matter of fact it’s the opposite, but to deliver on it is what’s impressive.
They explain the whole game thing well. Super well, actually. Like it makes a lot of sense. I mean not really but in terms of the world of the movie it does. The story ends up basically being somewhat predictable from the well explained premise, like I feel as if I could’ve easily written the events of this movie.
That is, up until the ending. That’s where it gets complicated but again can’t talk about that. Even though the plot is predictable, it’s very well written. All of the characters are really fun, and everyone is incredibly well acted except kinda sorta the grandmother/aunt.
Though maybe she’s just campy I don’t know for sure. There’s some music in here and it fits super well in the scenes it’s in. The movie also looks great effects wise (there is an exception to that though (kinda, I can’t totally tell if the effect is good but it looked a little off to me)).
When it tries to build tension, it definitely does. When it has action, it works. When it does comedy or tries to be dark, it works fully. I feel like they just succeeded in everything they tried to do.
It’s very good overall I’m just conflicted about it.
