Review of Ray (2004) by Nicolas M — 19 Apr 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
It's not too hard to give an impersonation of someone like Ray Charles. He was a unique and memorable figure in the world of music. But, it is more difficult to capture the essence of who he really was. Jamie Foxx did this and deservedly won an Oscar for it.
Foxx is the legendary Ray Charles. The film follows him from his heartbreaking years as a child and through the his attempts at becoming a musician. We also see the trappings he would fall into once he became a superstar.
Thoughfully constructed and lovingly filmed, "Ray" at times seems like a typical showbiz story, but the performances lift it to a much higher level.
