Review of Ray (2004) by Frances H — 18 May 2013
Wonderful biopic with an outstanding performance by Jamie Fox. One very admirable point about the film was that, just because Ray Charles was beloved and blind, there was no attempt to whitewash him into a plaster saint.
Particularly good was the realistic portrayal of what a drug addict's withdrawal is like, not glamorizing drug use in the least. Also, although toned down from the actuality, there was acknowledgment of his womanizing tendencies.
Another strong point was using actual Ray Charles recordings, not someone else performing his music as some other musician biographies have done. All in all, an excellent film.
