Found his own unique voice & style in his gospel & country & western roots to his R&B music. Whether his heroin added more than detracted from his music is debatable. His illegal addiction to it certainly did threaten to take it all away from him.

He could only find the freedom to go on from it's grip when he could let go of the guilt of witnessing his little brother drown at an early age. I f you don't cry during some of these riffs & tunes then you ain't right.
