Review of Raw (2017) by Cristian B — 27 Mar 2017
Raw is a coming-of-age tale like no other. Under the veil of a very unconventional topic, Ducournau deconstructs, patiently and with gusto, one of cinema's most revered virtuosities: perversion. In the vein of the best Cronenberg, there's a deeply textured layer of cinematic prowess that intrigues as much as it repulses.
What impresses the most, however, is the restraint. This film could have easily fall victim to the genre's tropes, in the process losing its tight grip, exquisite pace and compelling narrative. Fortunately for fans of intellectual cinema with a strong stomach, Ducournau wants Raw to be just that: food for thought.
