Review of Ravenous (1999) by Alec C — 26 Mar 2010
This is a very odd movie. It has all the makings of a cult classic, it's awful in some ways but great in others. There an odd cast, Guy Pierce and Robert Crlyle, with some actors from LOST and band of brothers, and the soundtrack is composed by Nyman and Damon Allbran of Blur. Also it's about superhuman cannibals. It's kind of horror, but it's not that scary, because at the points it should be getting intense, slapstick hillbilly fiddle music is played and deflates and mounting tension.
I think for all its faults it was hard to deny that it was a very interesting movie. The music does eventually result in some atmospheric scenes, and just when you think "this is ridiculous, I can't watch this anymore", it gets better again. Seems like a precursor to some of John Hillcoat's contemporary westerns which I'm a big fan of, and considering the subject matter (mythical cannibal zombies), it's quite modest in its approach. But ye, watch at your own risk...
