Review of Ravenous (1999) by Melissa J — 17 Oct 2011
This is a perfect example illustrating how little "professional" critics know and can be trusted about film reviews. A completely original (the myth of Windigo n/i) story and screen play, coupled with a perfect offbeat and unique score, and of course excellent lead roles from Pearce and Carlyle make for one of the best surprises of the late 90s, certainly one of the best horror flicks.
If this can even be called one. There are gory scenes, but in no way is the film defined by them. There's action, uber suspense, and the cinematography, tone, costume, script et al are excellent. It has twists, humor, culture and yes, even historical lessons in it.
In a (current) decade of nothing but stale CMGI effects and remakes, this remains one of the best reliefs for horror and certainly a great example of crossover genres. A must own in my opinion.
