Review of Ratcatcher (1999) by Marc L — 23 Mar 2015
This is not a movie. It is artistically rendered, moving pictures, but not a movie. To say the director "wrote" this, is giving discredit to writers everywhere. There is no real narrative.; no momentum moving any kind of story forward.
It's like the director had an idea, "Life is bleak. Yadayadayada. I'll write some words on paper, story doesn't matter. I'll cut some interesting shots, I am so arty and cool." This movie is analogous to the virtuoso guitar player who blows your mind with their amazing musicianship.
But when they open their mouth or you listen to their lyrics; they sound juvenile or moronic. This is nothing more than an overhyped film -student movie; somebody got excited that they let her use a video camera.
It is frustrating and difficult to sit through; giving you momentary hope that it might become intersting. Hey art students of the world, it can be beautiful AND have a compelling narrative! If I am being perfectly honest, this is some boring-ass, pretentious, depressing, bullsh#t!
