Review of Ratcatcher (1999) by Rod S — 15 Aug 2007
Social drama. A 12 year old Glaswegian boy lives in the slums with his drunken father, mother and two sisters awaiting relocation to a nicer part of the city. James lives out his life playing by the canal - with his friends Kenny a retarded animal lover and vulnerable teen Margaret Anne who has sex with the local boys to escape her world of grinding poverty.
James finds himself more and more estranged from this life by escaping to the half constructed housing estate where he feels he belongs. Images of derelict flats, bathing in the tin tub, combing hair for nits whilst the garbage piles up during the dustmen's strike, to be cleared by the army that finally break the strike.
Tom Jones appears on TV in black and white whilst smoking and drunkeness is prevalent to escape the terrible grinding life in the slums. Social drama with a sharp insight of reality.
