Review of Rashomon (1950) by Vinay C — 04 Jun 2009
A film on the concept of perception and subjective reality. This film awesomely shows the difference between FACTS and TRUTH, that truth is often manipulated when presented after a time.
The story is about the recalling of an incident from different people at a court. The people involved in the incident tell about what happened at a forest according to their own perception.
The ending of the movie depends on our perception. It is subjective.
The brilliance of this movie is that, there is no ending or "resolution" to the story. It defies the structure that many Hollywood films fight over and yet fail. The movie is a non-linear narrative which engages the viewer completely and challenges us to find out what really happened after the movie is finished. Each viewer will have his/her own interpretation of the event that was presented, after watching the movie. How many movies actually do that to you?
A MUST watch for everyone. Highly recommended.
PS: The term, "Rashomon Effect" came into existence after this movie.
