Review of Rashomon (1950) by Ken B — 12 Mar 2010
Does good exist?
Is man good?
These questions are explored through the framework of a rape/murder trial's retelling. It's well written. Black&white. Japanese w/subtitles. Some of the acting's more like stage drama. This sort of philosophical provocation really tickles my fancy. If you're looking for something like L&O:SVU you might be dissapointed b/c the film didn't make me as bummed as parts intended to. You'll recognize some of the 7-member cast from 7 samurai. The bandit's fighting style's funny. There's a lesson to this movie: a man w/shaved eyebrows+makeup in a yukata does not a woman make.
