Review of Rashomon (1950) by Matt F — 09 May 2010
Two things that I really love are here , Japanese period drama aka Jidaigeki and murder mystery in whodunnit style, yet I couldn't grasp the core of the story fully. So basically, there's a murder, and 4 people testify, including the victim through what seemed to be a female priest as a medium (with dubbed voice that's quite creepy).
The main problem is, all testimonies are different, so at then end it's basically up to viewers to find out and guess who's the real killer out of all, or is it basically a suicide case. I love the moral thing slipped at the end of the story though, and I could understand if some people love this film and dare to put it as their favorite Kurosawa, but as for now, I think I need another viewing.
Oh, and why an 8 ? I was riveted throughout the whole film, and it was really an interesting film to watch, especially the beautiful use of cinematography (that camerawork at the courthouse) and score.
