The film that became an adjective and a philosophy of cinema. I can imagine it's gestation as a thought experiment in film - the retelling of the same story from multiple viewpoints, each narrator adding a little more detail, and confusion, to the plot.

As humans we feel we have to struggle to piece together the real events, order the chronology, solve the mystery, but really what Kurosawa has us unravelling is a truth about the medium itself - cinema and photography is inherently subjective, and we forget that at our peril.
