Review of Rashomon (1950) by G S — 28 Nov 2011
Deserves being constantly ranked among the best films ever made. Kurosawa's first masterpiece film, the film that introduced him to the west, and the film most associated with him after only Seven Samurai.
Rashomon was the first Kurosawa film I ever saw and I was shocked at how courageous Kurosawa was to make such a unique and unusual movie. It is not like conventional films which provide audiences answers for everything; answers that are often sugar-coated and overly optimistic.
This great film makes a genuine attempt to find the truth and hope in a corrupt and dishonest film. It is the ultimate film about reality versus perception. Kurosawa never really tells us what happens, but shows us a bunch of conflicting accounts of the same event.
Through these testimonies, Kurosawa examines the nature of human beings and why we do certain things. It is one of the most perfect films I have ever seen and definitely one of the most profound. The richness of this film increases in my mind after every viewing along with my respect for it and for Kurosawa.
