Review of Ran (1985) by Paul D — 26 Dec 2008
Stop, stop, stop saying that it's based on King Lear, because that's only really partly true and was never Kurosawa's original intention. So stop it now. Immediately. Straight away. Right this second.
This is possibly the film that inspired George Lucas' planet-bound battle scenes in The Phantom Menace, all of which look crap when compared to Ran, Kurosawa's film completely negating Lucas' claim that he needed CGI technology to improve before he could portray the battle scenes that he had always wanted to.
The Japanese director did it in less time, with less money, less chin and absolutely no loss of dignity.
