Review of Ran (1985) by Jeffrey S — 10 Aug 2016
What an utterly depressing movie. Yet such a glorious epic.
You can really see how much of a film maker Kurosawa grew when compared to his earlier works such as the lighter Hidden Fortress.
With RAN Kurosawa utilized color in a way that mastered the medium, impressive given his large filmography in black & white. From his sweeping vistas of green to the shocking reds of his bloods. RAN is both a feast for the eyes as well as the mind.
It's a perfect example of what could be achieved with hundreds of extras that CGI of today's movies can never quite capture the same impact of.
Though the movie moves at a somewhat glacial pace, you are never bored with its proceedings. Every word of dialog reveals the sweeping plot of the unfolding tragedy.
You owe it to yourself to watch this at least once in your life.
