Review of Ran (1985) by Vijay L — 13 Jul 2010
Ran is the pinnacle of every epic film ever made, and should be a shining beacon of what a film maker should strive for whenever taking on history, action and Shakespeare. Kurosawa is my favourite director and Ran is his best work, with Seven Samurai and Rashomon right behind.
Every sequence, every line of dialogue, everything is done right. The battles are as epic as one could ask for, the sets and costumes are all accurate to the time but also add to the colourful beauty of the frame.
The pace is perfect as we remember all of the characters and their moral positions in the film, which can be tough with all of the long surnames. The film to me is perfect and you couldn't have asked for a better adaptation of the greatest playwright ever.
