Review of Ran (1985) by Tony P — 15 May 2009
An aweing epic, grand in scale, hot with drama but told from a calculated distance. Kurosawa's forward use of color and composition is dazzling, from the hypnotic scenes of intimacy to the shocking and expansive war sequences.
This, along with the eruptive performances and the exactitude of minor details culminate in making an especially slow story constantly intrigueing. Unlike anything I've seen, really took the wind out of me.
