Right up until the end, Kurosawa was a master of the film art form, and Ran is definitely one of his finest films. An adaptation of King Lear, it tells the story of Lord Hidetora who, being long in the tooth, decides to divide his land between his three sons (not daughters, Shakespeareanites).

However, his son's have other ideas about how to deal with the old man who relinquished his power, but wants to retain his status of Great Lord. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the battle scenes are an achievement all by themselves.

In this day of CGI all battle scenes feature hundreds of computer-generated extras: not Kurosawa. His film is filled with hundreds, probably thousands of extras, but more then being a fight movie, it is also a tragic tale of how a father was overthrown by his sons' greed.

SEE IT ALREADY!
