Review of Ran (1985) by Andrew D — 06 Nov 2010
Wow. This movie is truly an epic.
To state very quickly, the movie is about the tragic crumbling of a Japanese war Lord's kingdom as things continuely get worse and desperate not only for him but also for his sons' as well.
HAUNTING is what specifically describes this movie. it is laid out through the whole movie.
There are certain scenes that are extremely picturesque and beautiful that it left me flabbergasted to watch. Kurosawa's direction was amazing and I began to understand that he was using all of his filming experience to his best abilities to make this film come to life, especially the execution and timing of certain scenes.
The Japanese acting style is in the film in which each emotion is expressed through not only facial expressions but the body as well. Theater performance can be closely related to the acting just like what was displayed in "Seven Samurai". Yet, both styles of acting where very well blended just like in Seven Samurai.
The drama was extremely tense for almost every scene in this movie. If you like to watch movies that are upeat, happy, and can make your day, stay away from this movie. LOL.
Overall, the film is a hauntingly beautiful epic with drama that is fever pitch throughout. This truly is one of Kurosawa's Epic Masterpieces.
