Review of Rampage (2018) by Anthony K — 21 Jun 2018
Deliriously, deliciously stupid in the way that only a film clearly aimed at foreign (particularly Chinese) market could be. Everything is exaggerated, from facial expressions, to enunciation, to music, to "humor", it's all clearly meant to be a B movie that is only self aware half the time.
For example, no one seemed to give Malin Ackerman (unceremoniously killed off 3/4 the way through) the same note that Jake Lacy got. The Rock is his usual asexual but oh so attractive to women self here, and the CGI is impressive half the time, incredibly ropey the other.
One thing I want to call out in particular is the violence; there is some SHOCKING stuff here, the most notable of which being when Lizzie bites the Wolf's head clean off and EATS IT. I was genuinely sitting there, fist to mouth going OHHHH!! Also, the Rock not only survives, but shrugs off without pain a shot to the stomach.
Why did that happen?!? So confusing. This is *nearly* so bad its good, but what it really is is a great movie to have on at a frat house while everyone is getting drunk. It's honestly perfect for that.
I won't say that makes it good, but I will say it makes it worthy of existing.
